Tallgrass Prairie

Tallgrass Prairie

Posted on Posted in 2015

The Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve in located in central Kansas, just west of Emporia. This is one of the few remaining native prairies, unbroken by the steel plows of early settlers or modern farmers, and has existed as in this picture for millions of years. The ground grew 1″ every 600 years, and natural fires and the grazing of herds of bison limited the growth of trees.┬áNot in this picture but off to my right was a herd of wild bison grazing on these grasses.
